Ourika Valley Guide: Setti Fatma Waterfalls, Berber Villages and Where to Stay

The Ourika Valley near Marrakech: the Setti Fatma waterfalls hike, riverside lunches, Berber houses, argan cooperatives, the Monday market and the best places to stay.

Less than an hour from Marrakech, the Ourika Valley climbs into the High Atlas along a rushing river lined with walnut trees, Berber villages and cafés with tables right over the water. At the end of the road, the village of Setti Fatma is the start of a short, scrambling hike to a series of waterfalls. It is the easiest escape from the city heat, and a lovely first taste of the mountains.

Ourika Valley at a glance

  • Best for: an easy mountain day trip, waterfalls, riverside lunches, Berber villages
  • Ideal stay: a day trip from Marrakech, or 1 to 2 nights in a mountain guest house
  • Best months: March to June and September to November; summer is a cool escape from Marrakech
  • Arrive by: road from Marrakech, about 65 kilometres and 1 to 1.5 hours to Setti Fatma

What to see and do

  1. Hike to the Setti Fatma waterfalls. From the village, a local guide leads you across the river and up a rocky path to the first waterfall in about 30 to 45 minutes. Fitter hikers can scramble on to the higher falls. Wear shoes with good grip.
  2. Eat lunch over the river. In Setti Fatma, restaurants set tables and cushions on platforms right over the water. Try a tagine or grilled meat with the sound of the river below.
  3. Visit a Berber house. Along the road, families welcome visitors into traditional earthen homes to share mint tea and bread and show how they live.
  4. Stop at an argan cooperative. Women’s cooperatives show how argan oil is made by hand and sell cosmetic and culinary oils.
  5. Explore the herb gardens. Aromatic and botanical gardens near the start of the valley grow herbs and plants used in Moroccan cooking and cosmetics.
  6. Go to the Monday market. Tnine Ourika, at the mouth of the valley, holds a big weekly souk every Monday, where villagers come to trade.

Getting there

The Ourika Valley starts about 30 kilometres south of Marrakech, and Setti Fatma, at the end of the road, is about 65 kilometres away, 1 to 1.5 hours by car. Most visitors come on a guided day trip, often combined with a Berber house and an argan cooperative; compare Ourika day trips on GetYourGuide. Shared grand taxis leave from Marrakech towards Setti Fatma, or compare rental cars on DiscoverCars to explore at your own pace and continue to the Oukaïmeden ski area.

Do it like a Moroccan: local tips

  • Hire an official guide in Setti Fatma. The waterfall path crosses the river and climbs over rocks; guides know the safest route.
  • Avoid summer weekends if you can. The valley is a favourite escape for families from Marrakech and gets very busy.
  • Check the weather. After heavy rain or storms, the river can rise quickly; do not walk in the riverbed.
  • Bring cash. Cafés, guides and cooperatives mostly take dirhams.
  • Stay connected. A Morocco eSIM from Airalo keeps your maps working in the mountains.

When to go

Spring brings blossoms, green terraces and full waterfalls. Summer is busy but much cooler than Marrakech. Autumn is calm and golden, and in winter the peaks above the valley are often covered in snow.
